Pathaan comes together flawlessly with just the right amount of drama, thrills, action, and emotion. Together with screenwriter Shridhar Raghavan, director Siddharth Anand ensures that the story moves quickly and has frequent high points. One of Shah Rukh Khan’s best introductory sequences is without a doubt this one. He portrayed himself as an authentic superstar of Indian cinema, and he is deserving of every aspect of his performance.
It’s a political, international spy novel with romance and unexpected turns. You never know who is on whom’s side or who the real good guys or bad guys are. In addition, as is typical of Bollywood, any love scenes are implied rather than explicit; no kissing is permitted, and certainly not more than that. When I watched a Hindi movie 35 years ago, Bollywood was just as conservative.
Sure, there were a lot of beautiful, perfectly formed people staring into each other’s eyes and getting within an inch of each other. But that was the end of it. Controversially, some of the story and action take place in Russia. Although the scenery in Moscow is spectacular and the skyline is as impressive as Dubai, it felt uncomfortable knowing that this was filmed after the invasion of Ukraine. The script also stressed the importance of Russia as Sikh actors did not appear to be present either.
In action, Shah Rukh Khan looks fantastic playing a brave Indian soldier. It’s worth watching his style, swag, and witty punches. In addition, Deepika Padukone is given a meaty role and gets involved in the fight against the nation’s enemies. The person who ought to have valued John Abraham. He is a stylish villain due to his appearance and actions. He demonstrates with this movie that he can effortlessly play an antagonist. Audiences are riveted to their screens by the face-off scenes between SRK and John. Dimple Kapadia gives an excellent performance as the head of JOCR, Nandini. In the role she was given, she is elegant and subtle. Additionally, Ashutosh Rana gives his all.
Deepika Padukone, a stunning Danish-born ex-badminton player, plays the female lead and potential love interest of the good guy and bad boy. In many ways, from her costume to the setting and the story, she kind of reminded me of Catherine Zeta-Jones’ character in Entrapment. The producers deserve credit for making it for the equivalent of $30 million, as the required budget for a Hollywood movie would be well in excess of $100 million. If you are able to separate yourself from the couple of times they break into song, the sound was amazing and the music greatly enhanced the entertainment.
